Pillars — the main article of a cluster

The pillar is a cluster’s main article: the one every other article should link to.

How ClusterIQ picks it

Each cluster gets one pillar — two in clusters of 20 or more articles. ClusterIQ picks the best-linked article, if it is in the cluster’s top quarter by links in and has at least two; when two are tied, the one with the higher score wins. The other well-linked articles are supports. For pages as clusters, the page itself (the island) is the pillar.

Choosing it yourself

In Cluster Inspector, open the cluster and click the medal button on an article’s row. That article becomes the cluster’s only pillar and is marked chosen; ClusterIQ says which article it replaced, and the roles, graphs and lists update straight away. Click the medal again to let ClusterIQ pick.

Only administrators can choose pillars.

What uses the pillar

  • Improve this article flags articles that don’t link to their cluster’s pillar, with a button to write the link.
  • Link to the pillar (Pro) — Settings → Link styles: a short link to the pillar at the end of every article in the cluster, added when the article is shown, so nothing is written into your content. Choose another pillar and every link follows.
  • Pillar & split check (Pro) tells you whether the pillar fits the cluster, and names an overview article worth writing when no article makes a natural main page. See Pillar & split check.
  • The graphs draw the pillar as the cluster’s interchange, and the AI analyses (Pro) build their advice around it.
